When we think of what’s hurting our planet, we typically don’t consider the food we throw away, or where it ends up.

In the U.S., about a third of the food produced is never eaten. That’s about 90 billion meals worth each year, according to Refed, a national nonprofit. 

It comes as estimates show 42 million Americans face hunger every day.
