A tragic car crash in Minnesota has claimed the lives of two children and left three others injured.
The crash happened early Thursday morning in a pond in St. Louis Park — less than 10 miles away from Minneapolis. The car was about eight or nine feet underwater. (Via KMSP)
WCCO reports the driver has been identified as 23-year-old Marion Guerrido. She was able to get out of the car on her own, but her three children and two step-children in the car weren't able to get out.
Guerrido tried getting help from people nearby, but they weren't able to get the kids out of the cold water themselves. Minnesota State Patrol said some of the kids could have been underwater for as long as 45 minutes. (Via KARE)
KSTP adds once the kids were rescued, they were taken to local hospitals. As of Friday morning, 5-year-old Zenavia Rennie and 7-year-old Alarious Coleman-Guerrido have both died from their injuries.
The three other children, ages 6, 5 and 1, remain in critical condition. All of them were unconscious when rescuers pulled them out of the car. (Via WFTS)
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. They don't believe drugs or alcohol were factors but say the roads were wet when the crash happened. (Via WHDH)
The Minnesota State Patrol told reporters Thursday Guerrido doesn't have a valid driver's license.
