A day after he canceled the planned U.S.-North Korea summit, President Donald Trump told reporters talks were continuing and implied the meeting could still happen.

"We're going to see what happens. It could even be the 12th. We're talking to them now. They very much want to do it; we'd like to do it," he said.

Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis also told reporters Friday that diplomats are still working on the summit and said they "may have it back on, even."

And on Thursday, North Korean officials also said they're willing to sit down with the U.S. "at any time, in any way, to solve the problem."

Trump canceled the June 12 meeting following North Korean comments the U.S. perceived as aggressive. An official reportedly called Vice President Mike Pence a "political dummy" following statements Pence made on Fox News. The official also said North Korea was prepared for a nuclear showdown if the U.S. attacked.
