One of the most popular vacation destinations in the Philippines has reopened after six months of cleanup.

The island of Boracay — known for its beautiful white sand beaches and active nightlife — temporarily closed in late April for what government officials called some "much needed rehabilitation."

At one point, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte called the island a "cesspool" for it's inadequate sewage treatment and pollution.

During the months-long closure, a new sewage system was installed and hundreds of illegal buildings were demolished.

Only around a quarter of Boracay's hotels and resorts were allowed to reopen on Friday. And only a certain number of tourists will be allowed on the island.

Along with the re-opening came some major rule changes. CNN reports the island has banned single-use plastics, gambling, partying on the beach, and even setting up umbrellas or chairs on the sand.

The country's tourism department secretary says Friday's re-opening is just a soft opening. Work will continue through the end of next year.
