Police responded to the scene shortly after hearing gunshots while they were on patrol in the area.

They discovered the victims' bodies on the second and third floors of the house and say they found the suspected shooter on the roof — dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. (Via KSDK)

One neighbor told WCBS he was in shock after what happened in what he described as a normally safe neighborhood.

NEIGHBOR: "I heard the gunshots, but I didn't think anything of it. ... And then I came outside and seen all the news reporters. It's unusual because nothing like that every happens in this neighborhood. I'm shocked because it never happens. I've lived here my whole life, and I've never seen anything like this happen."

Another man was shot in the arm during the incident, but he is expected to be okay. WNBC reports police are still trying to figure out why the shooting happened.

REPORTER: "As for a motive, they're still trying to figure it out. But they say they are investigating a possible link to a music band and a disgruntled shooter that got kicked out."

Reporters say that's just one of several possiblities the NYPD is looking in to. According to police, the shooter and the victims knew each other, but they aren't releasing names until family members can be notified.
