President Donald Trump is blaming former President Barack Obama for not being "proactive" in trying to pass gun reform legislation.

In a bipartisan meeting on gun control Wednesday, Trump said it's time for a president to "step up."

Gun control was actually a key issue for Obama following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012. But legislation failed to make it through the Republican-led Congress.

In 2013, Obama announced proposals aimed at closing loopholes in gun buyer background checks, making mental health services more accessible, banning certain weapons and high-capacity magazines, and making more safety resources available to schools.

And in 2016 he wrote an editorial for The New York Times in which he said, "I will not campaign for, vote for or support any candidate, even in my own party, who does not support common-sense gun reform."

Obama also supported the 2013 Manchin-Toomey bill, which aimed to expand background checks for gun buyers. That bill failed to pass the Senate several times.
