USPS Forced To Pay $3.5M Fine Over Lady Liberty Stamp Mix-Up

The stamp was released in 2010. But it didn't feature the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor.

The U.S. Postal Service must pay $3.5 million over one of its old "Forever" stamps featuring the Statue of Liberty.

The problem is the stamp didn't showcase New York's Lady Liberty. Instead, the stamp design was of the Statue of Liberty replica on the Las Vegas strip.

The stamp was first released in 2010 and it wasn't until several months later that someone realized the mix-up. But USA Today reports that by that point 3 billion stamps had already been printed.

The sculptor behind the Las Vegas version sued for copyright infringement. He argued that his version was "sexier" and more "fresh-faced" than the statue France gifted to the U.S. more than 130 years ago.

The judge agreed that the sculptor's work was different from the New York version and ordered the post office to pay the fine. The Statue of Liberty "Forever" stamp was discontinued back in 2014.
