The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned a Chinese tech firm, its Russian sister company and the CEO on Thursday. The department claims the companies are fronts for the North Korean government.
China-based Yanbian Silverstar Network Technology Co., Ltd. and Russia-based Volasys Silver Star are believed to have earned millions of dollars for North Korea.
The Treasury also said the China-based company was linked to the North Korean government's defense research and ballistic missile programs.
The revenue raised by those companies helps the North Korean government skirt U.S. sanctions, which are intended to pressure the country to denuclearize.
