Two Mississippi Police Officers Killed, Suspects In Custody

The Hattiesburg Police Department identified the two officers who were killed as 25-year-old Liquori Tate and 34-year-old Benjamin Deen.

Mississippi police arrested four suspects Sunday, two of whom are charged with capital murder in the shooting deaths of two police officers killed Saturday.

"The men and women who go out every day to protect us, the men and women who go out every day to make sure that we're safe, they were turned on tonight," said the mayor of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The Hattiesburg Police Department identified the two officers who were killed as 25-year-old Liquori Tate and 34-year-old Benjamin Deen. Tate was a recent graduate of the police academy, and Deen was a K-9 officer who won Hattiesburg Police Department's officer of the year in 2012. 

The Oxford Police Department identified the suspects arrested as 29-year-old Marvin Banks, 22-year-old Joanie Calloway, Banks' brother, 26-year-old Curtis Banks and Cornelius Clark. Marvin Banks and Calloway are both charged with capital murder while Curtis Banks faces accessory charges and Clark faces obstruction of justice. (Video via Fox News)

According to a Hattiesburg Police Department spokesman, the shooting allegedly occurred during a routine traffic stop at about 8 p.m. Saturday. Mississippi officials haven't detailed what led to shots being fired, but according to Mississippi Department of Public Safety, both officers were shot at the scene and later died in the hospital. This shooting marks the first time a Hattiesburg police officer has died in the line of duty since 1984.
