First lady Melania Trump arrived at the State of the Union address Tuesday night without the president. She chose instead to ride in a separate motorcade with her guests.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders told CNN they're traveling separately for "no reason other than she can greet the guests and he can go straight in."

Why the fuss? Well, it's an unusual move, at least in recent history.

Former first ladies Michelle Obama and Laura Bush both opted to arrive at the events with their husbands.

Some outlets are pointing to this as an example of Melania Trump's independence. Just last week she canceled a planned trip to travel to Davos, Switzerland, with the president and instead visited Mar-a-Lago.

The Trumps will reportedly travel home together after the speech. CNN notes it'll be the first time they've been seen in public together since New Year's Eve.
