A 2-year-old Washington state boy is safe after he was allegedly abducted Tuesday. A man who was asked to babysit the toddler recognized him the next day from the Amber Alert.
Police say Ronnie Tran and his mother were kidnapped from their home. The mother was somehow able to escape without Ronnie, who police believed was with his maternal grandmother.
Now, this is where the story gets pretty bizarre.
KOMO reports a man named John Tuong ended up caring for Ronnie after his sister dropped Ronnie off at Tuong's house Tuesday night. Tuong says his sister claimed the child was her boyfriend's son and that she'd pick him up the next the morning.
"The couple hadn't seen the Amber Alert until John checked his Facebook newsfeed over breakfast," KOMO reporter Mark Miller said.
"It looks like this child in my bed. And I'm just like, 'Oh my God!'" Tuong said.
Tuong immediately contacted the police, who came and retrieved Ronnie. KING reports the authorities arrested Tuong's sister in connection with the kidnapping, and Ronnie's grandmother turned herself in later that day.
Since its start in 1996, Amber Alerts have been critical in saving missing children.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice website, 758 missing children have been successfully found alive because of Amber Alert programs.
As for Ronnie, he's now safely back home with his mom and dad.
