Officials say the Amtrak train that derailed over a major highway in Washington state was traveling more than twice the speed limit before it jumped the tracks.

A National Transportation Safety Board member told reporters Monday night the train was hurtling at 80 miles per hour when it derailed instead of the 30 miles per hour it was expected to travel. It's unclear why the train was moving so fast.

Police said 12 train cars and one locomotive came off the tracks Monday morning. Rescue crews were able to reach all of the cars by Monday evening. Most were too unsafe to search earlier in the day.

At least three people were killed and dozens of others were injured in the crash.
