A sequel to "Michael," the April biopic about Michael Jackson, will delve further into controversies surrounding the pop star who died in 2009, nephew Jaafar Jackson said.

Jaafar Jackson, the son of Michael’s brother Jermaine Jackson, played the lead role in "Michael." The film is one of five to gross more than $1 billion worldwide so far in 2026.

"I think the second film will give even more insight from his point of view, because at the end of the day, those controversies are always from someone else’s," Jackson told GQ.

Reports said "Michael" cut scenes that addressed those controversies. A settlement related to past legal disputes reportedly included a clause restricting depiction or mention of an accuser in any movie.

It is unclear how a sequel would handle those issues.

Two executors of Jackson’s estate were involved in producing the film.

"There have been so many stories told about Michael from so many different people," Jaafar Jackson said of the original movie. "This is to tell Michael’s story finally from the point of view of himself."

He added: "It’s someone else’s story. It’s someone else’s idea of what it is, and it’s mainly driven by an agenda. That’s really the issue we’ve been having as a family — not having Michael’s voice being heard. I think that’s very, very important, especially in the later years."
