Boeing announced Monday that Dennis Muilenburg has resigned from his positions as CEO and board director, effective immediately.

The company's Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith will fill in as interim CEO during a brief transition period, then board Chairman David Calhoun will take over as CEO and president starting Jan. 13.

Boeing said the board of directors "decided that a change in leadership was necessary to restore confidence in the Company moving forward as it works to repair relationships with regulators, customers, and all other stakeholders." The aircraft manufacturer said its new leadership will "operate with a renewed commitment to full transparency."

Muilenburg had faced scrutiny for how he handled the grounding of the company's 737 Max aircraft after two crashes that killed 346 people.

Boeing announced last week it would temporarily suspend production of the 737 Max starting in January.
