Search and recovery efforts at the site of the White Island volcano in New Zealand are being put on hold, as scientists say there's potential for another eruption.

The volcano erupted Monday afternoon while 47 people were visiting the popular tourist destination. Authorities say six deaths have been confirmed, while dozens more are hospitalized and being treated for severe burns. The eight people still missing are presumed to be dead.

According to scientists tracking the activity of the volcano, the level of volcanic tremor is now at the highest level seen since an eruption that occurred in 2016. Scientists said Wednesday there is a 40% to 60% chance of another eruption within the next 24 hours.

Police are on standby to resume recovery efforts once the activity levels drop.
