Israeli forces began removing metal detectors at the entrances to a holy site in the Old City of Jerusalem late Monday.

The move came after Israel's security cabinet met again Monday and decided to use other security measures rather than the detectors.

The detectors had been placed at the entrances to what's known as the Temple Mount to Jews and the Noble Sanctuary to Muslims in a move that sparked deadly protests.

On Friday, three Palestinian protesters were killed. That same day, a Palestinian killed three Israelis in their home in the West Bank.

The installation of the detectors came after three Arab Israelis killed two Israeli police earlier this month. Israeli leaders said they were a necessary security measure, but Palestinians viewed the move as a power grab more than anything else.

Israeli media reports the detectors will be replaced with more advanced technology that could include facial recognition software.
