Pakistan's Malala Yousafzai, 17, became the youngest person to ever to be awarded Noble Peace Prize on Friday for her work on children's rights.
Malala is known for promoting girls' education, especially in the region of Pakistan where she's from — the Swat Valley.
And, of course in 2012, she was the target of an attempted assassination by the Taliban and shot in the head while on a school bus. The terrorist organization has tried to restrict or eliminate women's access to education in Pakistan.
Since then she's continued to champion girls' education, appearing at the United Nations in 2013 on her 16th birthday to call for wider access to education for women.
MALALA YOUSAFZAI VIA UNITED NATIONS: "Let us pick up our books and our pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one teacher, on book, and one pen can change the world."
Many thought she would win last year but the prize instead went to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
Notably, Malala shared the prize with 60-year-old Kailash Satyarthi of India for his work on childrens' rights as well.
