Authorities in Mexico have found human remains and a motorcycle in a small grave — possibly bringing an end to an American family's nearly six-month-long search.
Thirty-two-year-old Harry Devert disappeared in Mexico in late January while on a motorcycle trip from the United States to Latin America. CNN reports Devert's last contact was with his girlfriend when he sent a text message saying the military escorted him from an area that was too dangerous for him to be.
Devert's mom says it wasn't uncommon for her son to lose contact for a few weeks, but when he did, he normally gave some sort of warning. (Via WCBS)
And for several months, there have been no answers in the mysterious case until now. Authorities found a body and a motorcycle in a small grave after responding to a tip.
The family's lawyer told WCBS the vehicle identification number of the motorcycle found near the remains matched the motorcycle Devert took on his trip.
A Facebook page dedicated to finding Devert says his mother is traveling to Mexico. "The coming days will be busy, scary, and sad at times.......but, we can together HOPE AND PRAY.......for Harry."
The discovery comes at the same time Devert was planning on attending the World Cup. On his blog, he said he would go to the Cup before wrapping up his trip at the southern tip of South America. (Via A New Yorker Travels)
In an article published Saturday, the family's lawyer told ABC Devert's mother is: "remaining optimistic and ... she's doing the best she possibly could do in this very trying time."
The State Department has issued travel advisories for Americans traveling through Mexico saying citizens have been targets for robberies, carjackings and even kidnappings.
Officials still need to identify the body as Harry Devert.
