Dozens of people are dead and more than 80 others are injured after a bombing in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Tuesday.

The attack seemed to target a large gathering of Afghan clerics marking the Prophet Muhammad's birthday. Afghanistan's interior ministry spokesman told news outlets the cause of the blast was a suicide bomber.

No militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, which was one of the deadliest in Afghanistan this year.

A suicide attack at a voter registration center in Kabul in April left at least 57 people dead and more than 100 others injured.

Civilian deaths from the conflict in Afghanistan hit a record high in the first half of 2018, according to a July report from the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. Nearly 1,700 civilians died and more than 3,400 were injured during that time period.
