Witnesses say it sounded like "an incredible explosion" when the fire escape of a Philadelphia apartment building suddenly collapsed and injured three people.

"NBC 10 cameras were there as a friend holds on one one of the victim's hands who is apparently conscious as the victim is placed into an ambulance by medics." (Via  WCAU)

KYW-TV reports, a man — who is critically injured — and two women were rushed to local hospitals.

"Police believe that bolts of the fire escape appeared to be rusted and dislodged from the brick wall of the apartment building."

The victims fell more than 30 feet to the ground, and now the incident is under investigation. Worth noting: The complex is more than 100 years old, and is even on Philadelphia's historic registry. (Via  WOIO)

Local reporters are all pointing out the city's Licenses and Inspections Department hasn't filed any violations in the past when it comes to the old building, so Sunday's collapse came without warning.

Neighbors say the three victims, reportedly all in their 20s, may have been partying on the fire escape landing before the incident. (Via WABC)
