Los Angeles On Track To Ban The Sale Of Fur

Other California cities like San Francisco and West Hollywood have fur bans.

Fur isn't really a required wardrobe item in Los Angeles, where the average temperature only falls below 60 degrees about two months of the year.

But its city council took a major step Tuesday to make sure no company can manufacture or sell new fur products in the City of Angels.

It ordered the Los Angeles City Attorney to draft an ordinance for such a ban. When that's finished, the council will need to give final approval, and then the ban would go into effect two years later.

Los Angeles is the largest city to talk about banning fur. San Francisco, West Hollywood and Berkeley have already implemented similar bans.

A growing number of fashion companies have also pledged to go fur-free, including Burberry, Versace and Michael Kors.

Not surprisingly — animal rights groups applauded the Los Angeles City Council's move. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Fur Information Council of America told the Los Angeles Times a fur ban would negatively impact retailers.
