A Florida politician is being charged with posession of cocaine and this is only his first year in office.
Politico reports Republican Congressman Trey Radel, of Florida's 19th congressional district, was arrested Oct. 29 for possession of cocaine in the District of Columbia. If convicted, he could face a maximum of 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
In a statement, Radel said, "I'm profoundly sorry to let down my family, particularly my wife and son, and the people of Southwest Florida. I struggle with the disease of alcoholism and this led to an extremely irresponsible choice. ... I have a problem and will do whatever is necessary to overcome it..." Radel is a former TV anchor and radio host who was elected to office in November 2012 with strong support from Tea Party groups. He succeeded Rep. Connie Mack and took office this past January. (Via CNN )
It's a misdemeanor charge for the rookie representative who doesn't appear to have any prior substanstial run-ins with the law.
Still, Radel is likely not in as much trouble as Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is in over this admission. ... "Yes, I have smoked crack cocaine." (Via CBC)
