The Pentagon confirmed the first openly transgender recruit has signed a contract to join the U.S. military.
A Defense Department spokesperson told CNN the recruit passed all medical exams and will begin basic training soon. But an official spokesperson declined to identify the recruit's gender or future military branch.
This comes after President Donald Trump tweeted in July that the armed forces would not accept transgender troops because of the "tremendous military cost" and "disruption." But in December, a federal court forced the Trump administration to allow transgender people to serve openly.
The Trump administration has not revealed its policy for handling future enlistees. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis met with Trump to discuss the issue privately. A Pentagon spokesperson said it is waiting for the president's final decision after the meeting with Mattis.
