The Department of Homeland Security says there are an increasing number of attempts to hack U.S. election infrastructure, according to NBC News.

Citing a department intelligence assessment, the outlet reports "numerous actors are regularly targeting election infrastructure, likely for different purposes, including to cause disruptive effects, steal sensitive data, and undermine confidence in the election."

DHS reportedly hasn't identified who is trying to infiltrate the systems but says recent attempts have been unsuccessful.

Those attempts reportedly include using multiple strategies to attack Vermont's online voter registration database back in August.

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said earlier this month, there's "no indication that a foreign adversary intends to disrupt our election infrastructure." But the report says both China and Russia have actively tried to influence the political environment.
