Police are still looking for two suspects after a Denver-area sheriff's deputy was killed on duty Wednesday night.

Heath Gumm, 32, was killed during a foot chase, according to the Colorado Police Officers Foundation. The Adams County Sheriff's Office, where Gumm worked, wouldn't confirm Gumm was the deputy killed.

The sheriff's office said deputies were responding to an assault when the suspect started running and that when deputies caught up to him, he shot at them, hitting one of them in the chest. Authorities said the suspect took off again before he was later arrested.

"On behalf of the entire sheriff's office, we are praying for the wife and family of our fallen deputy," said a spokesperson for the Adams County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies blocked off several city blocks, which were still under heavy police surveillance Thursday during the hunt for the two other suspects. Dozens of schools in the area were closed Thursday because of the shooting.

Gumm is the second Denver-area deputy to be killed on duty in less than a month. Douglas County sheriff's deputy Zackari Parrish was killed on New Year's Eve.
