The Pentagon is reportedly not revealing a brand-new missile defense system after it failed a test in Hawaii.

U.S. officials revealed the failure on the condition of anonymity.

The Pentagon doesn't want to make public the fact that the new defense system, tested in Hawaii, failed amid a slight break in otherwise tense relations with North Korea ahead of the Olympic Games in South Korea.

Hawaii's emergency response has come under scrutiny after a false alarm indicated there was an incoming ballistic missile headed for the islands. After a more than half-hour period, the alert was corrected.

CNN notes the new missile defense system is still in development. The most recent test gives the system a 1 in 3 success rate.
