Good morning. I'm Nathan Byrne. Thank you for watching Newsy. We're watching Washington, where U.S. senators are still trying to come to terms on an economic stimulus package that could inject the economy with as much as $2 trillion, a combination of actual spending and federal loans. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said he wants a vote by Monday, but negotiators failed to reach an agreement by Saturday evening. Lawmakers are under pressure to do something to provide economic relief against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic. Economists predict record joblessness ahead of next week's official Labor Department report. Doctors, hospitals and nurses are asking President Trump to urgently increase production of medical supplies and equipment. In a letter to the White House Saturday, the American Medical Association and two other groups point to dwindling supplies of critical gear like respirators, masks and ventilators. They're asking President Trump to use the Defense Production Act, a Korean War-era law that basically gives the federal government authority over production in the private sector. And some U.S. companies are jumping in. On Saturday, President Trump announced the clothing company Hanes is retrofitting its plants to produce masks for health care workers. According to a statement cited by ABC, the company hopes to produce as many as 6 million masks a week. Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed Saturday his company is also donating millions of masks to health care workers in the U.S. and Europe. Thank you for choosing and trusting Newsy to bring you what you need to know. More headlines coming up in a bit.
