"The House Committee on the Judiciary is introducing two articles of impeachment charging the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump with committing high crimes and misdemeanors," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said.

President Donald Trump is now facing two impeachment charges: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

After reviewing the findings from the House Intelligence Committee's investigation, Nadler said Monday President Trump put "himself before the country" when he allegedly withheld aid from Ukraine to pressure the country to investigate his political rival Joe Biden.

"We must be clear, no one, not even the president is above the law," Nadler said.

The presentation of the articles of impeachment now heightens the possibility of President Trump becoming the third president in the history of the United States to be impeached.

"The President's oath of office appears to mean very little to him. But the articles put forward today will give us a chance to show that we will defend the constitution. And that our oath means something to us," Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff said.

President Trump responded to the announcement on Twitter, calling the allegations that he pressured Ukraine false.

The debate on the articles of impeachment is expected to begin in the Judiciary Committee later this week.
