After a reported federal investigation was launched into Apple's software update that slowed older iPhones, the tech giant appears to be defending itself.

In a statement, Apple told media outlets that it would never intentionally "degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades." The company did admit last month to a software update that it said would prevent sudden shutdowns on older iPhone models and apologized to customers for its battery controversy.

Bloomberg first reported that the U.S. Department of Justice and the Securities and Exchange Commission were behind the probe. Apple confirmed it has received government inquiries, which it's responding to, but didn't specify from which agencies.
