A new study found that having one alcoholic drink a day could shorten your life expectancy.
Researchers looked at regular drinkers in countries around the world and concluded drinking more than 100 grams of alcohol per week increases the risk of death overall. Guidelinesvary by country, but that's the equivalent of about seven drinks per week in the United States. The study estimates drinking more than 350 grams per week, for example, may lower a person's life span by four to five years.
Study authors say the findings highlight the need to reduce the alcohol consumption limits in most guidelines. They also note that more research is needed, in part because some of the data was self-reported.
