Sleep Number Announces $8,000 Smart Bed

The dual-mattress bed will reportedly do everything from track your sleeping habits to make your partner stop snoring.

Recently it’s been all about the “internet of things” — smart cars, smart phones, even smart appliances — all objects connected to the Internet. Now one company is looking to add another inanimate object to the list — your bed.

Launched at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Sleep Number has rolled out a dual-mattress bed that does everything from tracking your sleeping habits to making your partner stop snoring.

Called the x12, the bed can reportedly track breathing, heart rate — even whether you’re lying still or moving over the course of the night. (Via Sleep Number)

Then, using that data, give you advice on how to get a better nights sleep.

As The Verge writes, “Data from your sleep is displayed in companion apps for smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. The technology, which the company is calling Sleep IQ, scores your rest and offers you suggestions for how to improve it.”

Outside of telling you how to sleep though, the bed will reportedly also listen to commands — using the sound of your voice to initiate under-bed lighting, built-in massage, and the anti-snore features.

The last of those, that anti-snore feature, might be a hit with couples — allowing them to forego a quick jab in the ribs for the touch of a button. (Via Sleep Number)

According to Sleep Number’s Chief Product Officer the press of that button raises the angle your partner is sleeping at, resulting in “an ever so slight articulation” that “at least temporarily relieves your spouse's snoring." (Via USA Today)

It’s a non-confrontational approach that has already won at least one, clearly sarcastic, endorsement. Engadget writes “... anything that introduces passive-aggression to domestic relationships wins our vote.”

The new beds are set to roll out next month, but they reportedly won’t come cheap — with a queen size starting at around $8,000. (Via GigaOM)

If you’re mulling that price over, we have one bit of advice — maybe sleep on it.
