The Google Wallet app now lets you send money directly to a person's phone number.

Before you had to know a person's email address, but now all you need is the phone number in your contact list. The person receiving the money doesn't even need the Google Wallet app on their phone.

Whoever you send money to gets a text message with a secure link. That person just has to click on the link to enter in their debit or credit card number and claim the money.

blog post announcing the update says the funds should be available "within minutes."

Just to be clear, this feature isn't for Google's mobile payments system, Android Pay. This applies to the peer-to-peer-focused payments system Google Wallet.
