The "Supergirl" live-action TV series is moving faster than a speeding bullet by skipping the pilot and getting a straight-to-series order from CBS.
The Hollywood Reporter writes that the drama will follow the adventures of Superman's 24-year-old cousin, Kara Zor-El, as she develops her own superhero identity.
Greg Berlanti, who previously worked on the CW's "Arrow," will team with former "Chuck" producer Ali Adler to pen the script.
This deal with CBS brings a superhero show to every major network. The CW has "The Flash" and "Arrow," NBC has DC's supernatural thriller "Constantine," Fox's Batman prequel "Gotham" starts up next week and ABC has it's tie-in to the Marvel cinematic universe, "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."
And let's not forget that Netflix has four original Marvel series slated for sometime in the future as well.
Yeah, that's a whole lot of superheroes. Especially when you consider the genre is far from slowing down at the box office.
Marvel is currently dominating that area with its most recent film "Guardians of the Galaxy" grossing $300 million at the box office.
But while DC lags behind on the silver screen they are dominating television sets.
"Arrow" is already an established hit and the comic book giant has three new series launching this fall and now "Supergirl" is in the making.
Plus it's placing a female character at the center of one of its projects, which will please many critics who have spoken out about a lack of leading women in the genre.
Bustle certainly likes the idea but writes that the show's writers must embrace the characters female identity if it wants to stand out.
It's far too early to tell when fans will get to see the "Supergirl" series but there are plenty of costumed heroes on TV to keep them entertained until it premieres.
