Disney Hopes 'Guardians' TV Show Will Attract Male Audience

Disney will develop a "Guardians of the Galaxy" animated television show in an effort to expand its audience demographics.

It's this year's top-grossing film so far. So, for Disney, the question has got to be: why not create a "Guardians of the Galaxy" TV show?

Disney XD announced the venture at New York Comic Con Friday. The animated series is set to launch in 2015 and will feature the same characters from the film.

Disney XD is a channel owned and ran by Disney which gears its cartoons and animated shows primarily toward younger audiences.

But an executive at the channel told The New York Times Disney XD hasn't quite found its "defining show". So maybe an animated version of "Guardians of the Galaxy" will be it?

Maybe. The network has seen success with some of its shows, "Lab Rats" and "Kickin' It", but its audience still consists primarily of young girls.

Mainly due to the popularity of hit shows like "Hannah Montana" on the network's sister channel, Disney Channel.

And top box-office movies featuring princess fairy tales, like last year's beloved "Frozen".

But with Disney's acquisitions of Marvel Entertainment in 2009 and Lucasfilm in 2012, the company has made new efforts in capturing a growing male demographic.

The new "Guardians of the Galaxy" show will join another new series, "Star Wars Rebels", as well as the current line-up including three other Marvel-branded shows featuring Spider-Man, the Avengers and the Hulk.

Still, competition is fierce. Nielsen ratings put both Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network largely ahead of Disney XD in attracting a male audience.

"Guardians of the Galaxy", the film, has earned more than $600 million worldwide. Disney hasn't said whether the actors who starred in the movie will voice their animated counterparts.
