The Venice Carnival will be ending early after a spike in coronavirus cases in northern Italy over the weekend.

The governor of the Veneto region told reporters that the festivities would go on as planned on Sunday but then shut down. The annual Carnival draws tens of thousands of visitors to the city and was supposed to run through Tuesday. Schools and other public events will also be closed in Veneto until at least March 1.

A dozen towns in northern Italy are on lockdown after two elderly people died from the coronavirus. More than 130 people in Italy have tested positive for the coronavirus. Authorities in the Lombardy and Veneto regions are urging people to stay home. Officials are still trying to find "patient zero," the first carrier of the virus in the country.

The coronavirus has sickened nearly 78,000 people and killed more than 2,300 people worldwide.
