It's now the world's most expensive gemstone ever.

That's more than $83 million for this diamond, the "Pink Star." It has the highest possible rating for color and clarity for a diamond. It's an unbelievable 59.6 carats. That winning bid came to Sotheby's via telephone Wednesday night. (Via BBC)

The buyer was a well-known diamond cutter out of New York, Isaac Wolf, and he's renaming the diamond the "Pink Dream." (Via Bloomberg)

Auctioneers noted the incredible rarity of this pretty-in-pink diamond — even the crown jewels of England don't have a stone of this quality.

The diamond was mined by De Beers in Africa in 1999, and took two years to cut and polish.  It first debuted in 2003, when Danish model Helena Christensen wore it an exhibit. In 2007 it sold privately. (Via CTVForbes)

Prices of polished diamonds have climbed dramatically over the past 10 years, and this diamond's grade and purity put it among the top 2 percent in the world.

Oh, and the music that played at the auction? The "Pink Panther" theme.
