Dutch lawmakers have approved new legislation to ban face-covering veils and clothing from some public places.

The upper house of the Netherlands' Parliament approved the bill 44 to 31 votes on Tuesday.

The ban includes the burqa, which covers the entire face and body, and the niqab, which only covers the face. It also applies to ski masks and full-face helmets.

Anyone caught violating the ban in public places like schools and hospitals will face a fine.

The Netherlands is just the latest European country to introduce a measure like this. France, Denmark and Germany have all moved to ban face-covering clothing in public.
