Weakening Hurricane Blanca Nears Mexican Peninsula

Hurricane Blanca is expected to weaken to a tropical depression by Monday, but Mexico's Baja Peninsula is still bracing for heavy wind and rain.

Hurricane Blanca is bearing down on Mexico's Baja California Peninsula, but the storm appears to be on the decline.

On Sunday, Blanca was sitting a little more than 200 miles southwest of Cabo San Lucas, where a hurricane watch is in effect. NOAA has also issued tropical storm warnings for areas farther up the coast.

"It's on a weakening trend, encountering cooler water and stronger winds aloft that are not favorable for its maintenance," said a Weather Channel correspondent. (Video via The Weather Channel)

The storm is still expected to pound the Baja California Peninsula with gusting winds up to 70 mph and heavy rains that could trigger flash flooding and mudslides.

This comes as some areas are still recovering from Hurricane Odile, which swept through last year in September. (Video via NBC)

Blanca is expected to weaken to a tropical storm by Sunday night and then to a tropical depression by Monday.
