A police officer was injured in a late-night shooting Saturday in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, Missouri.
KTVI reports the shooting occurred at the Ferguson community center. The officer was struck once in the arm and is being treated at a local hospital.
Some information is conflicting at this stage: multiple outlets cite a media briefing in which police say two suspects were involved,
But NBC says a statement from St. Louis County police indicated only one suspect. KSDK’s report, too, suggests a lone shooter.
“Police tell us an officer was checking the building when he saw a suspect running out the back door and then that officer was shot in the arm.”
A search of the area after the suspect or suspects fled the scene yielded no results, despite heavy police presence on the ground and in helicopters overhead. (Video via KMOV)
The shooting comes as Ferguson still simmers over the death of Michael Brown in August. Authorities were careful to stress they have no evidence Saturday’s shooting was in any way linked to Brown’s.
But for those involved, Brown’s death is still top-of-mind. Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson made a public apology to Brown’s parents and the community last week. (Video via CNN)
And the Justice Department is now scrutinizing certain practices at the Ferguson Police Department in the wake of the shooting, particularly the “I am Darren Wilson” wristbands some members are wearing — a reference to the officer who shot Brown in August. (Video via USA Today)
A Grand Jury is now considering federal charges for Wilson in the case. The Washington Post reports a decision could come as soon as November.
