Pope Francis spent his first full day in Mexico driving through throngs of followers, many of whom slept outdoors the night before to get close to the pontiff.

Mexico’s president Enrique Peña Nieto was on hand to greet the pope. Francis received the typical massive welcome when he arrived.

As the first Latin American pope, Francis is viewed as carrying especially strong influence during visits like these, and he’s promised during his visits not to spare his criticism over corruption in Mexican government and warring among drug lords in Mexico.
