Former N.Y. Governor Eliot Spitzer, Wife Announce Split

In a statement released Christmas Eve, Elliot Spitzer, who admitted to seeing prostitutes during his time as governor, is splitting from his wife.

A statement released Tuesday by disgraced former New York governor Eliot Spitzer says he and his wife of 26 years are calling it quits. 

It reads, "We regret that our marital relationship has come to an end, and we have agreed not to make any other public statement on this subject."(Via CNN)

There was no specific reason given for the split. But it comes several years after Spitzer's infamous fall from grace. (Via Magnolia Pictures  ) 

"Spitzer had paid the Emperors Club VIP around $15,000 for the seven or eight times he had a call girl named Kristen... Reportedly he had spent around $80,000 on prostitutes." (Via The Biography Channel

Two days later, "I am deeply sorry that I did not live up to what was expected... I am resigning from the office of governor." (Via CNN )

And as you saw, Silda Spitzer stood by her husband through the ordeal. But it has been rumored for sometime now that the two were living apart. 

The news comes as reports surface that Elliot Spitzer has started a new relationship. (Via New York Post

"Sources tell CBS news that Spitzer and Lis Smith are dating. Smith and Spitzer met when she joined his failed campaign." (Via WCBS)

Spitzer's camp released a statement saying Smith and he are firends and he holds her to high regards. There's no word yet on if Spitzer and his wife have filed for divorce.
