The FBI is investigating what are being described as threats against Bowe Bergdahl's parents — more than a week after the Taliban released the former POW.
So far, KBOI reports the FBI has not said what type of threats it's investigating.
The investigation has begun in the midst of serious questions over whether Bergdahl's release was worth the exchange of five Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo Bay. (Via Fox News)
And amid accusations Bergdahl deserted his unit before the Taliban took him as prisoner. CNN points out the Army hasn't been able prove whether he actually deserted his unit because it doesn't know his intent.
There are also reports six U.S. soldiers died while searching for Bergdahl. That's according to someone involved in the operation, as well the mother of one of those soldiers killed. But one U.S. official told CNN: "right now there is no evidence to back that up."
The FBI's investigation into threats also comes just days after Bergdahl's hometown of Hailey, Idaho canceled a welcome home celebration — citing concerns about large crowds and security in the small town. (Via KTVB)
A USA Today writer says some of the anger over the situation has also affected others who live in Hailey.
"Shopkeepers ... received nasty calls and e-mails. The Chamber of Commerce got so many negative rants it decided to forward all calls to voice mail. Residents who had once gladly expressed their joy over a hometown son's return went silent."
An FBI special agent wouldn't say how many threats were made against Bergdahl's parents, but he says the group is taking all threats against them seriously.
