A UFC title fight Saturday featured possibly the most gruesome live, televised sports injury since Louisville's Kevin Ware fractured his leg during March madness.
UFC legend Anderson Silva snapped his shin in a losing effort to defeat current UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman. Silva delivered a routine kick to Weidman's leg but the kick landed on the knee. (Via Sports Illustrated)
"One of the things we work on is getting the knee on that shin and making them pay for it. ... I certified myself as champion. That's what I wanted to do, but I don't like to see another guy go down like that." (Via Fox Sports)
Silva was taken to a Las Vegas hospital immediately after getting carted off the mat. He underwent a successful surgery and is in recovery. (Via WPEC)
UFC released a statement regarding Silva's injury, which says in part: "Anderson is deeply touched by the outpouring of support from his fans and the entire MMA community. There has been no immediate decision about his future..." (Via UFC)
Though Silva hasn't announced whether this is the end of his career, most sports writers believe a return for the 38 year old is pretty unlikely.
"Anderson Silva might never fight again ... I would never put anything past Silva, but a full recovery at age 38 would be a task." (Via ESPN)
This is Silva's second loss to Weidman, and the first time in his storied career that he's ever lost two fights in a row.
