Park Service Proposal Could Raise The Cost Of White House Protests

The proposal received pushback from the ACLU, which says rules like this would be unconstitutional.

Protests like these could soon be a thing of the past. That's if the National Park Service has its way.

Back in August, the Park Service proposed over a dozen new rules for demonstrators gathering around monuments — including the sidewalk in front of the White House. The proposal suggests protesters repay the agency for its support, such as security and permit processing, to help protect and preserve "the cultural and historic integrity of these areas."

The proposal has received pushback from the ACLU, which says rules like this would be unconstitutional and could limit people's rights to free speech and peaceful assembly.

The public has until Monday to comment on the proposal.
