Co-founder and former Uber CEO Travis Kalanick is stepping down from the company's board of directors.

Uber announced his resignation in a statement Tuesday. It's effective at the end of the year. The company said Kalanick would now focus on his "new business and philanthropic endeavors."

The move came less than a week after Uber agreed to pay $4.4 million to settle sexual discrimination charges brought against it by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The EEOC investigated Uber after a 2017 sexual assault charge. The commission found "reasonable cause to believe that Uber permitted a culture of sexual harassment and retaliation against individuals who complained about such harassment."

Earlier this month, Uber released its U.S. Safety Report, saying it received nearly 6,000 reports of sexual assault between 2017 and 2018. Throughout the report, the company emphasized that 99.9 percent of its rides occur without any incidents.
