Amazon is laying off hundreds of employees in a move to make room for others in areas of the company that are growing.
The layoffs will mostly affect the company's Seattle headquarters, but CNBC reports cutbacks might affect workers globally. They follow rumors of a hiring freeze.
The retail branches of the company will take the hit in favor of areas like Alexa, Amazon Web Services and digital entertainment.
If the move comes as a surprise, you're not not off-base — Amazon spent the past few years on a hiring spree.
But Amazon isn't done expanding. It's currently seeking a location for its second headquarters.
