The Senate approved President Obama’s "fast track" authority Wednesday by a 60-38 vote. The bill — also known as the Trade Promotion Authority, or TPA — now makes its way to the president's desk to be signed.
The bill's passage is thanks to a rare alliance between the president and Republicans. But it's not a slam dunk because most Democrats oppose it.
If signed, the bill would create a "fast track" in the legislative process for Obama — as well as the next president — to get trade bills through Congress.
Earlier this month, a bill that would have granted the same power appeared to be dead in the House but just last week was given the green light. Now the Senate has also signed off, Obama could have an easier time with his foreign policy agenda. (Video via C-SPAN)
Specifically with Asia and the 12-nation Pacific Rim trade pact he's tried to forge. Many Democrats fear this deal could cost U.S. factory workers their jobs.
