French police think they might have caught the man responsible for a shooting spree around Paris this week.
A prosecutor said a man bearing a "strong physical resemblance" to the shooter was taken into custody Wednesday evening. They later gave his name as Abdelhakim Dekhar. (Via Liberation)
Authorities believe Dekhar was involved in at least three incidents: threatening the BFMTV news offices with a gun, shooting and injuring a photographer for France's Liberation newspaper and firing several shots outside the Societe Generale bank before carjacking a motorist to make his escape. The photographer is believed to be the only person injured in the shootings. He was shot twice at close range in the chest and stomach and is in critical condition. It was his first day working at the newspaper.
The shootings sparked a massive manhunt for the suspect. Police took up positions around media outlets across the city and put out a call for leads, and even the prime minister stepped in, vowing to catch the suspect by any means necessary. (Via The Guardian, Le Figaro)
The suspect in custody was arrested in a parking garage after members of the public spotted him. Police said he couldn't immediately be questioned or read his rights, but they didn't say why. A DNA test to confirm his identity is underway.
