According to Kenyan officials, eight critically endangered black rhinos died recently at a national park. The rhinos had been taken to a new sanctuary as part of a translocation program to help increase the species population.
Preliminary investigations by veterinarians indicate they likely died from salt poisoning caused by difficulty in adapting to water with high salinity.
In a statement, Kenya's Ministry of Tourism called the deaths "unprecedented."
According to animal conservationists, there are currently only about 5,000 black rhinos living in the wild.
