A mother and her boyfriend are in police custody after the woman's 3-year-old daughter was found dead at their home Saturday night in Napa, Calif., which as KTVU notes, is a "normally quiet" city.
"A neighbor saw them walking down the street away from the street carrying some luggage and that neighbor noticed little Kayleigh wasn't with them. Three hours later police were called to do a welfare check on the child and found her dead in the apartment."
Police are treating her death as a homicide. After an anonymous tip they found and arrested Kayleigh's mother, 23-year-old Sara Krueger and her boyfriend Ryan Warner, at a train station in a neighboring city, Sunday. (Via KNTV)
Both have been arrested in the past on drug-related charges.
The apartment manager claims when Warner moved in the couple became more isolated, had blankets over the windows and Kayleigh was rarely seen playing outside. (Via Facebook / Sara Krueger)
POLICE: "During the initial stages the investigators noted what appeared to be blunt forced trauma on the victim. Follow up also indicated the victim appeared to have been sexually assaulted." (Via KGO-TV)
FAMILY FRIEND: "This is not Sara, this is not the girl I know."
AUNT: "She was so protective of her. everyone's so confused because she would never let anything happen to her." (Via KRON)
About 100 family and friends held a candle light vigil for Kayleigh Sunday night.
